Annual Conference 2018 – London

Venue: Dr Williams’s Library (click here for pic) , 14 Gordon Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1H 0AR

http://www.dwl.ac.uk

Dates: Tuesday July 24th – Friday July 27th, 2018

Background to conference venue

The Library was established by the will of Dr Daniel Williams, the leading London nonconformist minister of his day, who died in January 1716. He left instructions that his collection be housed as a public library which would be made available to nonconformist ministers, tutors and students in the City of London.

The collections were enlarged over the years with many gifts of books, manuscripts and portraits, so that Williams’s original benefaction of about 7600 books forms only a small part of the modern library which extends far beyond puritanism, to cover church history and Unitarianism.

The present library building was designed by Thomas Leverton Donaldson, Professor of Architecture at University College, London and built in 1848-49 to mark the passing of the Dissenters’ Chapels Act in 1844. The premises were shared by Manchester New College from 1853. When the College (now Harris Manchester College) moved to Oxford in 1889, the building was acquired by Dr Williams’s Trust. Dr David Wykes, the present Director, is a longstanding Martineau Society member.

Artefacts relating to James Martineau will be displayed during the conference, which will be referred to in Dr Wykes’ opening lecture.

As always, the conference, which will take place in the Lecture Room (click here for pic), will be a mixture of lectures, papers, trails and social events.
