Two of our members, Stuart Hobday and Gaby Weiner, are giving a talk about Harriet Martineau in Norwich at 3pm on October 24th 2024 in The Forum Library in Norwich. It will focus on Harriet’s relationship with 19th Century America and is based on their recent book ‘Reintroducing Harriet Martineau’ (Routledge 2024).

Harriet Martineau was a well known 19th Century radical writer who originated from Norwich. Based on their new book ‘Reintroducing Harriet Martineau’ authors Stuart Hobday and Gaby Weiner will describe the relationship Martineau had with the rapidly developing United States particularly in relation to rights of women, the coming Civil War and the abolition of slavery.
Gaby Weiner has been a writer and academic most of her life. She edited the Virago edition of Harriet Martineau’s autobiography and has written extensively about Martineau.
Stuart Hobday researched and wrote a biography of Martineau entitled ‘Encounters with Harriet Martineau’ that was published by Unbound in 2017. He has had a career in cultural management that included founding the annual Harriet Martineau Lecture in 2012.
